National Museum of Military History Diekirch
Diekirch, LU
The **National Museum of Military History** (Musée National d'Histoire Militaire) in Diekirch is Luxembourg's primary institution dedicated to the country's military history, with the Battle of the Bulge — during which Luxembourg was the scene of significant fighting — forming the centrepiece of the collection. The museum contains an exceptional collection of vehicles, weapons, uniforms, equipment, and personal artefacts from both American and German forces, many donated or lent by veterans and local residents who preserved relics from the battle. Life-sized dioramas recreate winter combat scenes, supply operations, and civilian experiences during the German occupation and re-occupation. The museum's vehicle collection includes M4 Shermans, M36 Jackson tank destroyers, German half-tracks, and artillery from both sides. The Diekirch collection is considered one of the most important in Europe for the study of American and German military equipment from the 1944–45 period, and the museum's depth of documentation on the Sauer River fighting — often overshadowed by the Bastogne narrative — makes it an essential resource for understanding the full scope of the Bulge.
