The road bridge over the Rhine in Arnhem, objective and scene of the most celebrated stand of **Operation Market Garden**. From September 17–21, 1944, approximately 740 men of the **2nd Parachute Battalion** under Lt. Col. John Frost held the northern approach against massed German armor — including tanks of the **II SS Panzer Corps** — before being overwhelmed after running out of ammunition. The episode gave rise to the phrase "a bridge too far."
