The largest and most lethal Nazi concentration and extermination camp complex, where an estimated **1.1 million people** — approximately 90% of them Jewish — were murdered between 1940 and 1945. The complex included the Auschwitz I main camp, the Birkenau (Auschwitz II) extermination facility with four gas chamber complexes, and numerous satellite camps. Liberated by Soviet forces on January 27, 1945, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
