Baraque de Fraiture — Parker's Crossroads
Vielsalm, BE
**Parker's Crossroads** at Baraque de Fraiture was one of the most critical defensive stands of the Battle of the Bulge — a makeshift defence of a vital road junction by a scratch force under Major **Arthur Parker** that briefly stood between German armour and the relatively open terrain to the north. When the German offensive began on December 16, 1944, Parker assembled whatever units he could find — artillerymen, anti-aircraft crews, infantry stragglers, and armoured elements — to hold the remote crossroads at 650 metres elevation. For days, this improvised force held the junction against repeated German probes and attacks, before being finally overwhelmed by elements of the **2nd SS Panzer Division** on December 23. The loss of Parker's Crossroads opened the road north and contributed to the breakthrough at **Manhay** that night. The defence exemplified the American soldier's initiative and tenacity: officers assembled forces from disparate units and held ground that had no planned garrison, buying time for the broader defensive effort in the northern Ardennes.
