Poland's Thermopylae — on 7–10 September 1939, Captain Władysław Raginis and approximately 720 Polish soldiers held a fortified line across the Narew river against up to 42,000 German troops and 350 tanks. Raginis detonated a bunker rather than surrender. A memorial bunker and museum preserve the site.
