Bizory — Eastern Perimeter
Bizory, BE
Bizory forms part of the eastern defensive perimeter of Bastogne, held by elements of the **501st Parachute Infantry Regiment** during the siege of December 1944. The terrain east of Bastogne was relatively open farmland offering less concealment than the forested northern approaches, making it particularly challenging to defend. German forces from the **12th SS Volksgrenadier Division** and armoured elements applied persistent pressure on this sector throughout the siege. The defence of Bizory and the surrounding hamlets required constant patrolling, small-unit actions, and the kind of grinding defensive warfare that exacted a heavy toll on airborne infantry equipped primarily for light mobile operations rather than sustained positional defence. The experience of units in this sector — without adequate artillery support, winter equipment, or armoured vehicles — represents the tactical situation that made the Bastogne defence such a remarkable achievement and gave rise to the American soldier's nickname for the battle: **'the Battered Bastards of Bastogne.'**
