Canadian Memorial Trun
Trun, FR
The Canadian Memorial at Trun commemorates the soldiers of the **Canadian II Corps** — particularly the **2nd Canadian Infantry Division**, **3rd Canadian Infantry Division**, and **4th Canadian Armoured Division** — who fought through this area during **Operations Totalize and Tractable** in August 1944. The Canadian advance south from Caen to close the northern jaw of the Falaise encirclement was one of the most significant Canadian military operations of the Second World War. It involved sustained armoured and infantry fighting against some of Germany's most determined defensive forces, including the **12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend** and elements of the **9th SS Panzer Division**. The Canadians sustained heavy casualties during these operations — Totalize alone cost more than 5,000 casualties — but the advance was ultimately successful in closing the pocket and destroying the bulk of the German forces in Normandy. The memorial at Trun represents the broader Canadian contribution to the liberation of France, in which Canada played a disproportionately large role given the size of its population.
