Ettelbruck — Southern Shoulder

Ettelbruck, LU

Ettelbruck formed part of the southern shoulder of the Battle of the Bulge — the area where American forces managed to hold the line and prevent the German offensive from spreading further south. The **4th Infantry Division** and elements of the **9th Armoured Division** held positions in the Sauer River area south of the main breakthrough, a defensive success that was essential to containing the German attack. The town is closely associated with **General George S. Patton**, whose **3rd Army** was already operating south of the Bulge and pivoted 90 degrees north in one of the most dramatic command decisions of the war — turning three corps to relieve Bastogne within 48 hours of receiving the order. Ettelbruck honours Patton with a dedicated museum and a bronze statue — recognition of the American general's role in the liberation of Luxembourg in 1944. The town was itself liberated by Patton's forces and then re-occupied by the Germans during the Bulge, before being finally freed again in January 1945.
