The principal production facility for the **Fw 190** fighter, widely considered the best fighter in the world when it first appeared over the Channel in September 1941. Bremen was repeatedly bombed by the **8th Air Force** and **RAF Bomber Command** as part of the strategic campaign against German aircraft production; the city suffered 173 air raids during the war.
