Ludendorff Bridge

Remagen, DE

The railway bridge at Remagen over the Rhine, captured intact by the American **9th Armored Division** on March 7, 1945, when demolition charges only partially fired. The crossing provided the first Allied foothold east of the Rhine; **Hitler** ordered the execution of four officers who had failed to destroy it. The bridge finally collapsed on March 17. Towers on both banks survive as a **Peace Museum**.
