Luxembourg American Cemetery — Hamm

Hamm, LU

The **Luxembourg American Cemetery** at Hamm contains the graves of **5,076 American military personnel**, including — uniquely among Allied military cemeteries — the grave of **General George S. Patton**, who requested to be buried among his soldiers. Patton died on December 21, 1945, from injuries sustained in a car accident in Germany. His grave, marked with a standard white cross identical to those around it, is located in a prominent position near the flagpoles and is the most visited individual grave in any American military cemetery in Europe. The cemetery was established in 1944 during the Allied advance through Luxembourg and contains soldiers killed in the **Battle of the Bulge**, the Siegfried Line fighting, and the advance into Germany. The **American Battle Monuments Commission** maintains the cemetery on grounds provided by Luxembourg — a permanent presence that reflects the close relationship between Luxembourg and the United States that has existed since the liberation. A memorial building contains a mosaic map of the American campaigns and the Tablets of the Missing, listing those whose remains were never recovered.
