Maginot Line Hackenberg

Veckring, FR

The largest surviving **Maginot Line** fortification, a complete underground fortress housing 1,082 men with its own railway, power plant, hospital, and seven artillery blocks. The entire line was outflanked by the German breakthrough through the Ardennes in May 1940, rendering Hackenberg irrelevant without being attacked. Its garrison was ordered to cease fire on June 25, 1940, having never been directly assaulted.
