One of the two principal factories producing the **Bf 109** fighter, attacked simultaneously with the Schweinfurt ball-bearing works on August 17, 1943, in the **First Schweinfurt-Regensburg Raid**. Of 230 B-17s of the 8th Air Force dispatched, 60 were shot down — a catastrophic loss rate that temporarily halted deep-penetration raids into Germany without fighter escort.
