Nijmegen Waal Bridge
Nijmegen, NL
The road bridge over the Waal river at Nijmegen — the scene of one of the most extraordinary river crossings of the war on September 20, 1944. Men of the **504th Parachute Infantry Regiment** crossed in flimsy canvas assault boats under direct German fire to outflank the bridge's defenders, allowing British **Guards Armoured Division** tanks to cross and continue north toward Arnhem.
