A sector station of **No. 11 Group, Fighter Command** in Surrey that suffered one of the most devastating single attacks of the **Battle of Britain** on August 18, 1940 — "The Hardest Day." Kenley was simultaneously bombed from low altitude by Do 17s and from high altitude by He 111s, destroying nine aircraft on the ground. The operations block was hit but communications were restored within hours using a mobile unit.
