A key forward base of **No. 11 Group, Fighter Command** directly controlling the air defense of southeast England during the **Battle of Britain**. Severely damaged on August 16, 1940, when Ju 88s destroyed hangars and killed 14 personnel. Tangmere also served as the principal covert base for **SOE** operations inserting and extracting agents from occupied France by Lysander aircraft.
