The first Commonwealth cemetery established on liberated French soil, containing 2,562 soldiers including many from the **6th Airborne Division** who landed by parachute and glider in the early hours of June 6, 1944. The division secured the left flank of the invasion bridgehead by capturing **Pegasus Bridge** and holding the ridge east of the Orne river against German armored counterattacks.
