Recogne German War Cemetery
Recogne, BE
The **Recogne German War Cemetery** contains the graves of approximately **6,800 German soldiers** who fell during the Battle of the Bulge, making it one of the largest German military cemeteries from this battle. Maintained by the **Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge** (German War Graves Commission), the cemetery follows the characteristic German military cemetery aesthetic: low-lying black basalt lava crosses, many marking the graves of two soldiers buried together, set into a landscape of oak trees that creates a sombre and contemplative atmosphere distinct from the white-stone grandeur of American cemeteries. The soldiers buried here came from the **26th Volksgrenadier Division**, **15th Panzergrenadier Division**, and other formations that fought in the Bastogne area. Many graves are unidentified. The proximity of Recogne German Cemetery to the nearby **American cemeteries** at Henri-Chapelle and Luxembourg creates a powerful geographical juxtaposition — within a few kilometres, the burial places of the opposing armies face each other across the same Ardennes landscape where they fought in December 1944.
