Schoppen — V Corps Northern Shoulder
Amel, BE
Schoppen and the surrounding area of the Amblève valley represents part of the **northern shoulder** of the German breakthrough during the Battle of the Bulge — the sector where American forces of the **V Corps** managed to hold the line and prevent the German advance from spreading further north. The **1st Infantry Division** ('Big Red One') and **99th Infantry Division** absorbed the initial German assault in this sector and, while pushed back considerably, maintained continuous contact and never broke. The ability to hold the northern shoulder was critical to the entire Allied response — it prevented the German breakthrough from widening, and the northern road network anchored at **Elsenborn Ridge** denied the panzers the direct routes to Liège they needed. The fighting in this sector involved numerous small units — companies and battalions — holding villages, crossroads, and forest positions against divisions, buying the time that allowed the Allied strategic reserve to deploy.
