Camp / POW
Stalag Luft III
Żagań, PL
The German Air Force prisoner-of-war camp at Żagań in Silesia, best known for the **Great Escape** of March 24–25, 1944, when 76 Allied airmen tunneled out through a passage code-named Harry. All but three were recaptured, and **50 were shot** on Hitler's direct order — an act prosecuted after the war as a war crime. The camp held approximately 10,000 Allied prisoners at its peak, primarily Royal Air Force and USAAF aircrew.
