The KdF-Wagen (Volkswagen) factory at Wolfsburg, constructed from 1938 and converted to war production after 1939. During the war it produced Kübelwagens and aircraft parts using 15,000 forced laborers including French POWs and Soviet civilians. The plant survived the war largely intact and became one of the cornerstones of West Germany's postwar economic recovery, producing its first civilian Beetles for export in 1949.
