The historic fortress town of Wesel that was a key objective of Operation Plunder in March 1945. The **51st Highland Division** and **1st Commando Brigade** crossed the Rhine here under the cover of the largest artillery barrage assembled since Alamein, and the town's citadel now preserves the memory of the Rhine crossing that opened the final Allied advance into Germany.
