Westerplatte

Where World War II began on land. On 1 September 1939, 182 Polish soldiers of the Military Transit Depot held Westerplatte against German naval guns, dive bombers, and infantry for seven days before surrendering with honours. The peninsula is today a national memorial site with preserved trenches and ruins.
