Hitler's primary **Führerhauptquartier** (Wolf's Lair) in the Masurian forest of East Prussia, from which he directed the war on the Eastern Front from June 1941 to November 1944. The complex of 80 bunkers and structures employed approximately 2,000 support staff. On **July 20, 1944**, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg detonated a bomb here in an assassination attempt that narrowly failed. The facility was blown up in January 1945 as Soviet forces approached; massive ruins remain.
